Sam & Herc Journey

The Day Spock Learned to Swim March 3, 2026

Today, Herc and I received some sad news.

Spock passed away on Sunday.

For many people, that might not mean much. But for those of us who spend time at the park, watching our dogs build friendships and routines, it means a lot.

Back in March, Herc and I started walking at a nearby park.

At first, it was just another place to stretch our legs and get outside.

But if you’ve ever had a German Shepherd, you know they have their own agenda.

What started as a walk turned into longer walks.

Longer walks turned into chasing rabbits.

And eventually, chasing rabbits led to discovering the lake.

And once Herc discovered the water, there was no turning back.

That’s where we met Spock and his owner, Gordon.

Spock was a good dog.

Friendly.

Curious.

Always happy to see Herc.

The two of them became fast friends.

Over time, we’d see Gordon and Spock once or twice a week.

The dogs would play while the humans talked about life.

It’s funny how dogs introduce people who otherwise would have remained strangers.

One day, Gordon told me something.

He said Spock didn’t like water.

In fact, he was pretty sure Spock would never go into the lake.

That seemed reasonable.

At least until Herc got involved.

The two dogs were running and chasing each other near the shoreline.

Before long, Herc was splashing around in the water.

Then something unexpected happened.

Spock followed.

Not only did he go in the water, he started having fun.

The two of them jumped in and out of the lake, playing like kids on summer vacation.

I still remember Gordon’s reaction.

He couldn’t believe what he was seeing.

The dog that supposedly hated water was swimming.

And for a while, the two dogs just enjoyed the moment.

Months later, that simple memory became much more important.

For about a month, we stopped seeing Gordon and Spock at the park.

Life gets busy, and people come and go, so I didn’t think much of it at first.

Then today, Herc and I saw Gordon again.

He was there with Shadow.

But Spock wasn’t.

Gordon shared the news.

Spock had passed away on Sunday.

He had put up a good fight.

Now Gordon is making arrangements to have him cremated.

As we talked, I could see how much he missed him.

Anyone who has loved a dog understands that feeling.

They’re never with us long enough.

What struck me most was what Gordon said next.

Out of all the memories he had with Spock, one of the moments he remembered most was watching Spock enjoy the water with Herc.

That day mattered.

That unexpected little adventure became one of the memories he carried with him.

And honestly, that’s what this journey is teaching me.

We never know which moments will become important later.

The walk.

The conversation.

The swim.

The afternoon at the park.

The friend we make unexpectedly.

The dog who changes another dog’s mind about water.

As Herc and I headed home today, I found myself thinking about how grateful I am for the memories we’ve made.

Not just the big ones.

The small ones too.

Because those are often the ones that stay with us.

Rest easy, Spock.

Thank you for the friendship.

Thank you for the smiles.

And thank you for proving that sometimes all it takes is the right friend to convince you to jump into the water.

Gordon, our thoughts are with you.

And if you’re reading this, know that Spock’s memory lives on in the stories we tell and the smiles he left behind.

“Herc and Spock enjoying the water together. A simple afternoon that became a memory none of us knew we’d cherish someday.”
