The past two weeks have reminded me that sometimes the greatest rewards aren’t the ones you expect.
My neighbor, Mr. D, needed some help moving, so I headed over and we loaded up his truck. While we were working, he smiled and said, “Sam, I have something for you.”
I had no idea what was inside the box, but when I opened it and saw the pipe clamps, I was already grateful. Then came another surprise—a Porter-Cable router that fits perfectly into my Kreg Precision Router Lift and Router Table. It couldn’t have come at a better time for my woodworking projects.
As we continued talking, Mr. D mentioned that he was planning to sell his Nano Bully, Cash. He was saddened because he had invested a lot in him but hadn’t been able to train him the way he hoped.

Hearing that brought back memories of all the things people said about Hercules when I first got her. Many people had given up on her before she became my best friend.
I had been thinking about getting Hercules a companion, and I wondered if this might be the right opportunity. Maybe Cash could learn from her.
Three days later, Cash was already potty trained.
Today he enjoys four walks every day, follows Hercules everywhere, and is learning what it means to be part of the family. One of his newest accomplishments is mastering the “down” command. We’re still working on fetch, but every day he gets a little better.
What has amazed me most is watching Hercules step into the role of teacher and protector.
She brings him different toys to play with.
She shows him where to go when it’s time to take care of business.
She keeps him out of trouble.
She watches over him like a proud mother.

Watching Hercules become a mentor has been one of the greatest joys I’ve experienced. Sometimes dogs teach us lessons about patience, leadership, and unconditional love better than people ever could.
The blessings didn’t stop there.
After nearly three years away from the weight room, I finally walked back into the gym. It felt like reopening a chapter I had put on hold. During my first week back, I worked out twice. This week I’ve already been back two more times. It’s not about lifting the heaviest weights anymore—it’s about investing in my health, rebuilding strength, and proving to myself that it’s never too late to start again.
As if that wasn’t enough, our family also welcomed another incredible blessing.
On July 2, I became a Great Uncle for the third time. Welcome to the world, Miles Andres Mahoney.
Between unexpected gifts, welcoming Cash into our family, returning to the gym, celebrating the birth of Miles, and watching Hercules embrace her new role as teacher, these past two weeks have been filled with gratitude.
It’s a reminder that the seeds we plant through kindness, hard work, and perseverance often grow into blessings we never saw coming.
Helping a neighbor led to new tools and a new companion for Hercules.
Giving Hercules a second chance has allowed her to give Cash one.
Taking care of my health has reminded me that every journey begins with a single step—even if it’s a step back into the gym after three years.
Life has a funny way of rewarding us when we keep moving forward with an open heart.
The fruits of labor aren’t always measured by what we build with our hands. Sometimes they’re measured by the people we help, the lives we touch, the health we regain, and the family—both two-legged and four-legged—we’re blessed to share the journey with.
