Wooden Crosses, a 3D Dragon, and a Family Weight-Loss Challenge

October 19, 2026 | By Sam — Sam & Herc Journey

Some weeks are about getting things done, and other weeks are about learning something new. This week, I managed to do a little of both.

Between making progress on my woven wooden cross, assembling my first 3D printer, and starting a weight-loss challenge with my nephew, it’s been a pretty exciting week.

And of course, Hercules is still doing what she does best — enjoying life and keeping me company.

The Woven Cross — Getting Better One Cut at a Time

I’ve continued working on my woven wooden cross, and I’m happy to say my lap joints are getting better.

This time, I’ve been using my scroll saw to make the cuts, and I’m starting to see a real improvement in how the pieces fit together.

When I first started making these crosses, getting everything to line up was a challenge. Some joints were too loose, others needed more work, and a few pieces didn’t survive the process.

But that’s part of learning.

Each cross has taught me something, and I’m beginning to understand how small adjustments can make a big difference.

I’m not trying to rush through these projects. I enjoy working with the wood, figuring things out, and seeing my progress.

There’s something satisfying about looking at a project and knowing you’re getting better at something you couldn’t do before.

My First 3D Printer — From Assembly to My First Dragon!

This was probably the biggest surprise of the week.

My new Snapmaker U1 3D printer arrived, and I couldn’t wait to get started.

I assembled the machine, went through the setup process, and before the day was over, I had completed my very first 3D-printed project!

I used one of the sample print files that came with the printer and made a little multicolored dragon.

Red body, yellow details, and big eyes. Not bad for my first attempt!

What made the experience even better was watching the machine bring the design to life.

I’ve spent a lot of time working with wood, cutting, sanding, gluing, and finishing things by hand. Now I’m learning an entirely different way to create something.

And I already have ideas for future projects, including a personalized name tag for Hercules and a jig to help me make more accurate cuts on my woven crosses.

I even managed to put together a video and publish it on YouTube.

I’m looking forward to seeing what else I can make.

A Little Friendly Competition — The Race to 172 Pounds

Last week, my nephew and I decided to challenge each other.

The goal is simple: Who can reach 172 pounds first?

Here’s where we stand:

  • Me: 185 pounds — 13 pounds to go.
  • My nephew: 186.6 pounds — 14.6 pounds to go.

I’ve got a little head start, but that doesn’t mean anything yet!

For me, this isn’t just about winning a challenge. It’s another reason to stay active, pay attention to what I’m eating, and keep working toward a healthier lifestyle.

Having someone to share the challenge with makes it a little more interesting.

We’ll see who gets there first.

And I’m sure there will be a little friendly teasing along the way!

Hercules and Buddy — No Time for Pictures!

Hercules is doing well.

I was hoping to get a nice picture of her this week, but apparently she had other plans.

Fortunately, I have a picture of her carrying Buddy, her stuffed toy, around the house.

That’s Herc.

She doesn’t need to do anything special to make me smile. Sometimes it’s just watching her walk around with a toy in her mouth.

She’s been my companion through so many adventures, and whether I’m in the workshop, working on something new, or simply relaxing, she’s always part of the journey.

I guess this week Buddy gets to make an appearance on the blog too!

Another Week, Another Lesson

Looking back, I’m proud of what I accomplished this week.

My woodworking is improving. I’ve entered the world of 3D printing. I’ve started a new challenge with my nephew. And Hercules is doing well.

None of these things has to happen overnight.

I’m retired, and one of the things I appreciate most is being able to learn something new without feeling like I’m racing against the clock.

Some days things work out. Other days I have to try again.

Either way, I’m enjoying the process.

Slow, peaceful progress. That’s what this journey is all about.

Until next time,

Sam & Herc

Learning, creating, staying active, and enjoying the journey — one day at a time.
